SERTOMA’s primary service project is assisting the more than 50 million people with hearing health issues. SERTOMA also sponsors community projects to promote freedom and democracy, to assist youth and to benefit a variety of other local community needs, as identified by the individual clubs.
The Lawrence SERTOMA Club and the Lawrence Board of REALTORS® Community Foundation are collaborating to bring a holiday light show, Lawrence Lights - Making Spirits Bright to Lawrence and Douglas County - the first of its kind for our community!
The lighted drive-through tour will feature animated displays synchronized to holiday music.
In a partnership with the City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, Lawrence Lights - Making Spirits Bright will be on full display at the YSC Complex located in southwest Lawrence.
The holiday light show will open following Thanksgiving and remain open through January 1st. All proceeds will remain in the community to support the beneficiaries of the Lawrence SERTOMA Club, the Lawrence Board of REALTORS® Community Foundation, as well as the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Wee Folks Scholarship Fund.

Since 1978, the Lawrence SERTOMA Club has donated funds to the KU Schiefelbusch Clinic for Speech and Hearing for their use for unfunded needs. Since 2004, a major part of the Club Sponsorship Fund has been donated to the Schiefelbusch Clinic for their summer camp for children with speech and hearing challenges. Registrations quickly fill the Camp to capacity and there is usually a waiting list.

The Club has funded the Hearing Loop for The Lawrence Public Library and The Lawrence Community Theater. The induction loop is to hearing aids, what Wi-Fi is to laptops. Looping allows hearing assistive devices to serve as wireless loudspeakers, delivering clear, sharp, customized sound right from inside the ears. It can be adapted to use in large public spaces, such as airports and auditoriums. But it can just as easily be installed in churches, drive-up business windows and even into a single room at home so the TV or stereo sound becomes a broadcast going directly through the hearing assistive device. Looping is a cost effective way to make more precise hearing available. The value of also having an area looped in the case of emergency situations is priceless. |

In the late 1930s, the Lawrence Club sponsored the first lights on the ball field at South Park. The ball field was closed some 30 years later and is now where the City Park & Recreation office building is located. SERTOMA Member dues fund the Club's operation. All the profits from the SERTOMA Club's fund raising go into the Sponsorship Fund. Most of the Sponsorship Fund is used for "People" programs. But there are some more visible projects such as the popular Gazebo in Buford Watkins Park that was donated in 1985. Some other people projects funded are Just Food children summer program, and Meals on Wheels publicity program. |
